Yew Tree Farm Reviews

Meriel
Magical home and location. Wonderful walks straight from the door. Friendly hosts. Definitely wish to stay again! A large bowl to serve salads etc in would be welcome in an otherwise well equipped kitchen. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Robert
We stayed at yew tree farm just before Christmas with our grandchildren, we all had a fabulous time and the walk into conniston from the cottage was beautiful. The cottage itself was picture perfect, and set in the most wonderful position.
We have had an amazing three nights at Yew Tree farm. Jo and Jon were really friendly and welcoming. The cottage is amazing, packed with character. It was lovely and warm on a night after a nice dip in the hot tub, so peaceful, a great place to recharge the batteries. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
We had a fabulous stay and loved the experience of staying at Yew Tree Farm. There was everything we needed to enjoy our family weekend and thank you so much for the wine, flowers, milk and card.
A lovely stay in the most photographed cottage in The Lakes, very atmospheric property definitely feels like you walking in Miss Potters footsteps. Clean and comfy beds, and constant hot water. The meat from Yew Tree farm shop was delicious and we really enjoyed doing the Herdwick experience it was very informative and great to cuddle the Herdys who were super friendly. A perfect place to stay if you want the experience of going back in time has the decor of the property is very olde world.
Hannah
The cottage was amazing and it was such an experience staying somewhere so old. John and Jo were very welcoming and gave us lots of tips on all things local. It was also lovely having bird feeders right outside the window, we saw birds weve never seen before. Yew tree cottage was a great base to explore from, as a family we walked along footpaths to Coniston, and we were within easy reach of Hawkeshead, Ambleside and Windermere by car.
Richard
A magical place with lovely people. Have never had a more relaxing break. Produce from the butchers was fantastic. Love the fact its so dog friendly. Looking forward to going back in December.
A great dog friendly cottage on a working farm with lots of character and charm. Jo and Jon the resident farmers are very friendly, welcoming and showed us the farm animals. Easy check. Relaxing walks from the front door. We enjoyed the hot tub in the evenings. Good showers and lots of hot water. Beds also very comfy. I would recommend this cottage.
Rachel
This cottage is a beautiful, characteristic and historical home that our family were very happy to spend our New Year in. We enjoyed watching the birds on the feeder every morning! The beds were so comfy and the kitchen was equipped with all the necessities. Within the most beautiful surroundings and the lovely quaint village of Coniston within easy access. We have a very relaxed week and enjoyed the hot tub!

We spent Christmas at Yew Tree Farm, its an incredible experience, as its a Grade 2 listed building, set in the most beautiful scenic area and also a working farm. I felt privileged to be able to stay in such a historic building. Inside its decorated in William Morris wallpaper, with creeky floors and beams and wonderful old furniture. The bathrooms, all three of them are well equipped with strong pressure showers and one has a wonderful huge bath. Three bedrooms, two with four poster beds, and one twin have crisp white linen and heavy duvets all of exceptional quality. Theres a well presented dining room, which I dressed for Christmas with paper chains and fairy lights. There was a Christmas tree provided and little Christmassy touches throughout. The living room with an open fire was cozy and comfortable and you could almost feel the history of the place. Every attention to detail with lamps and fittings all appropriate to the building. There was a secure stone walled private garden, where my Schnauzer dog played and around the side of the property a hot tub which was the perfect place to spend an evening. The kitchen has everything you could need to prepare a full Christmas dinner or any other meal you may care to make. The property is well situated, for walks and close enough to visit Ambleside and Hawkshead. The owners work and live on site but are busy, and you really only see them about their jobs, though it was nice to know they were about if we needed them. I would recommend this accommodation to anyone looking to stay in a place both beautiful, and full of charm.
The house was gorgeous! Exactly what we expected, in the most perfect location. It is a farmhouse and has every farmhouse feature, love it! Jo and John made sure everything was ready for us on arrival and the hot tub was cleaned and ready for use within the first 24 hours. .
Elaine
Fantastic holiday cottage with bags of heritage on a working farm Jon & Jo Watson the perfect hosts. Its our fourth visit surely that says enough.
Stephen
We're going back again. So much character and charm that we cannot resist. John and Jo were excellent hosts and made us very welcome. Would highly recommend the onsite butchery as well.
The decor and layout and quality of the place was excellent but it had an overwhelming failing. The heating system did not work properly and as a result I had to leave after only 3 days because it was too cold to stay in
Michael
Disappointed there was dog hairs over the carpet in the room and we had to hover it on the first night because we had a nine month baby with us. Also disappointed that the hot tub was not ready for use on our first night. Fridge seemed very small for a house that sleeps six. The barbecue was small, and we had to clean it before we could use it.
We absolutely loved our stay in this property steeped in history. The scenery is phenomenal and John and Jo were perfect hosts.
Richard
Absolute splendid holiday cottage was like living in a museum stepping back 300 years. Great location to tour the lakes, with great walks on the door step all outstanding. John and Jo were the perfect hosts, nothing too much trouble. Highly recommend the Heritage meat sold on site meat like you've never tasted before!! Highly recommend.
We had a great stay, ideal location, so atmospheric and ideal for those who like to travel back in time and imagine themselves living in another reality like I do. I wish I'd brought period costume with me but there was sadly no room in my case. Also my 14yr old brought me back to reality when the WiFi kept turning off and there were no instructions as to the location of the router. All it needed was to be turned on and off. Previous families have suggested updating the guest information book but I notice this hasn't happened yet. This would save guests having to bother the tenants. For anyone reading this it's next to the switch for the lamp on the landing behind the magnificent chest. The tenants were very helpful and friendly, very busy people but happy to help even when in the middle of a workshop. Also they do have bus loads of tourists like us attending on occasion so do look out for friendly Americans requesting to use the loo. Maybe a sign on the external toilet door for those guests would be helpful? Although, we were happy to oblige by allowing them to use one of the 3 bathrooms in the cottage as had no idea what alternatives there were beyond the flower bed or a bush! Also you never know when you might get caught short yourself! My only other point of concern was the abundance of fruit flies in the kitchen. This must surely be a season thing? The cottage kitchen was very clean. The cottage is by a stream may be irrelevant!? and I note the mesh on the front door of the tenants cottage. Perhaps such a measure might be considered at Yew Tree, although may spoil the old world charm for photos, would potentially stop the appearance of 20 dead flies in your wine. We made sure food was covered and the bin emptied at least 2 times in the week but still every morning it was fly armageddon in the kitchen and the hoover came out. The beds were really comfy, loved the large bath and the hot tub was fab after an evening swim in Coniston water or a long walk. All of this added to our adventure in the Lake District and I feel very grateful and privileged to have been able to experience such a special place with all its quirks and charms.
A wonderful, friendly reception from the owners John & Jo & ALL their dogs, cats & Herdwick sheep! . The fascinating18th century farmhouse provided very comfortable beds, efficient showers & very clean & cosy living rooms. We were also blessed with superb weather! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay & would also recommend John's Heritage meats, Jo's lovely artwork & found the staff at HeartoftheLakes most courteous & helpful.
An excellent property, full of charm and character. Well equipped with everything you could need for a fabulous stay. The hot tub was great after a long walk and the decking area perfect for a meal outside. We bought meat from the farm shop which was excellent and made use of the bbq facilities. The owners were very friendly, were at hand if we needed anything and we were made to feel very welcome including our dog. Can't wait to visit again!
Andrew
We had a really excellent time, thank you for your hospitality. It was a pleasure to meet you both and experience the farm, the sheep in particular, and the house seems just a small part. We hope to be back again one day, I am sure we will.
Good morning The location was stunning and the house beautiful. The facilities were as described. Beds very comfortable. The only misfortune was one toilet was broken and not able to be fixed in our weeks stay.
Not a lot to say apart from excellent place to stay access to some of the most beautiful parts of the Lake District great walking on your doorstep and made to feel at home John and Jo are excellent hosts, we had the most amazing week and to top it off the weather was beautiful.
Trevor
We found the property just as we expected but with added charm, and character. I beautiful location, with walks on our doorstep, with Coniston so close ideal for evening outs. Just two problems we had was the TVSky setup, perhaps some clearer instructions in the welcome pack, we managed to sort it out. Also, the internet was down, the modemhub had to be rebooted, again a location of the power switch would help. Again, once sorted, a good signal was achieved.
Absolutely beautiful cottage no wonder you need to book so far in advance. Ticks all the boxes, but I knew that before I booked ! Very friendly hosts & animals.
Ingram
Small items. Some serving dishes and oven proof casserole dishes please?
Elaine
Excellent cottage stay. Jon & Jo Watson are amazing hosts very welcoming and make your stay that extra bit special fantastic location.
We have stayed at Yew Tree Farm several times and love it. However our two previous bookings were cancelled because of Covid and this time we had no power for 3 days in freezing temperatures. We were grateful for Jon's help in lighting open fires for us when we arrived and providing candles. He also managed to borrow a generator on the third evening which provided heating and hot water and lighting in our bedroom. That was a relief because we had been very cold at night. We really appreciated the generosity and friendliness of those at Coniston Community Centre who provided a warm room, a hot drink and a bacon butty. Many thanks for that. It was so sad to see the devastation caused by Storm Arwen.
A great location in a traditional farmhouse cottage. I was particularly interested in the Beatrix Potter connection. The property lived up to my expectations and the owners were friendly and welcoming.
I have been lucky enough to live and holiday all over the world, but this was quite honestly the best accommodation I have ever had. For any fans of Beatrix Potter or anyone looking for some authentic old world charm cannot recommend yew tree highly enough!
Elizabeth
We have just spent another fantastic holiday here at Yew Tree Farm. What an absolute privilege it is to be able to stay in this house, so full of period character, charm, history and comfort. The tranquil location is stunning, and perfectly situated for the many surrounding walks and for easy access to neighbouring villages and towns. Jo and Jon are the most welcoming of hosts. The farm's Herdwick Experience run by Jo is one of the most enjoyable things you can do in the Lakes. A holiday at Yew Tree Farm is sublime.
We stayed at Yew Tree Farm Cottage 2nd 9th October 2021. Upon arriving, we thought it was paradise. A very old building, it was like stepping back in time. Because we arrived late we were grateful to be there. I did see a previous review saying about the lack of oven trays so we brought our own, and thank god we did. I am not sure the kitchen has been stocked with any new form of an appliance, utensil, or accessory since 1990! There were really not enough mugs or glasses for 4 people, let alone 6. And, we didn't think the glasses or mugs were clean. Then, the fun really started when my partner and I, who had the main bedroom, woke up to find about 8 wasps in the bedroom. By the 2nd morning, we had killed about 20 wasps, which was not fun, as my mum is highly allergic, and didn't have an epipen, as well as our 10monthold puppy which kept trying to eat them. I rang the people on the 3rd day, after 45 mins of standing in rooms trying to get a signal. The man came around, shone a torch, and explained there was not much he could do and if we had killed 20 that was probably the nest gone. A bit shocked at the lack of concern, I repeat that there is no signal so anyone staying who got stung and needed medical attention would struggle to get an ambulance and we had no idea where the nearest medical centre was. I then had to call the heart of the lakes on the 5th day, whose response was equally as lacking as the man who had come over a few days earlier. NO one was interested. So we spent our holiday with 57 wasps in total by the end of our stay. Furthermore, the internet kept going down, so don't stay here if you need to work while on holiday. Also, we loved that we could take a dog, but the dogs on the site liked to defecate wherever they pleased, which meant dog turds outside your car door, outside the cottage gate, so if you don't like stepping in a steaming dog turd, I'd suggest a torch in the evenings and minding your step as you go. Dont expect a lie in either as you'll have lawn mowing before 9 am, barking dogs, and other farm work goingons in the early hours. The hot tub has no cover over it, so if it rains you'll get a good soaking, as well as it being filthy. We didn't see anyone clean it with the daily chemicals that a hot tub should have. Oh and mind all the low beams that you'll regularly smash your head on as you walk about in both the day and night. Overall, if you love wasps in your bedroom, filth and dog turds, as well as an unclean hot tub then this is 100 the place to stay. Nice location, but we won't ever be staying here again. Heart of the Lakes, your customer service was a disgrace.
Very lovely cottage Not far from things to do or say the people look after the ... Very lovely cottage Not far from things to do or say the people look after the cottage very warm and welcoming and lovely people highly recommend this cottage to anyone
Rosemary
A couple of baking trays for the oven need to be added as there was no way of cooking food in the oven without wrapping the shelves in foil to use as a form of tray also a few more mugs would have been appreciated. Otherwise we loved our stay at the Farm. We bought some meat from the on site butchery to bring home which was lovely. Great friendly farmers at the farm. We would love to go back sometime, thanks.
Yew Tree Farm is a wonderful location. We were able to walk to some beautiful places from our front door the hot tub afterwards is a real plus. Jo and John were really helpful and the history of the cottage and farm is fascinating. We will definitely be back.
Very helpful owners and freindly, a real lovely place in which to stay . .. would come again
Claire
Fantastic stay! The cottage was absolutely wonderful. Jon and Jo were great hosts. The cottage was full of charm and history. In addition to the original features, nooks and crannies, creaky floorboards, wood panelling and the period furniture, there is a modern kitchen with everything one needs for a self catering stay as well as a private hot tub and outdoor dining area too. The open fire was already made up for us when we arrived which was a lovely touch and we enjoyed some relaxing nights in front of the fire. We had gorgeous weather during our stay and so it was really nice sitting in the private garden with a glass of wine soaking up the sunshine and views. I would definitely recommend taking the Herdwick Sheep experience with Jo it was terrific! Would love to return to Yew Tree Farm!
Such an amazing stay. Everything about the property is just incredible it feels like you're in one of Beatrix Potters books. The house itself is really special with loads of character. Wonderful to have the ewes and lambs right outside the gate greeting us each morning. I would highly recommend this place and am looking forward to returning.
Katrina
Our second stay at Yew Tree Farm Yew Tree farm is not only picture perfect it is the most beautiful home from home in the most stunning setting. The house has original features and furnishings inkeeping yet comfortable. The property has WiFi, Sky Tv, fully equipped kitchen including dishwasher, powerful showers with plentiful hot water and the most comfortable beds. Jo & Jon are fabulous hosts there if something is needed, or for a quick chat, but otherwise you have full privacy as if your own home. Jons meat from the farm is of the best quality and flavour, ethically farmed and can be ordered in advance to be set in the fridge for use during your stay, we also ordered some to take home, all perfectly organised and prepared, absolutely delicious. Jo runs a Herdwick Experience learning about the history of the area, the establishment of Herdwick sheep and Belted Galloways to the farm, the history and general knowledge of Herdwicks and how Yew Tree Farm ensure their livestock is ethically farmed from start to finish was really interesting & informative. We then continued our experience with a tour of the farms land, taking in the different sights and sounds, spotting different birds and wildlife, whilst meeting random animals enroute, like Skippy the goat who is extremely friendly! Jo then took us to meet her Herdwick flock who welcomed us with their smiley faces and lots of cuddles. An amazing experience not to be missed, the very best therapy

Rydal Mount & Gardens - LA22 9LU
about 4 Miles
Rydal Mount & Gardens are wonderfully situated between Lake Windermere and Rydal Water offering breathtaking scenery. The home of William Wordsworth from 1813 - 1850 the grand home is now lived in by the poets descendents but parts of the house and grounds are open to the public. Why not take a guided tour and see the rooms where many of the famous poems were written. The gardens are beautiful at all times of the year but in the summer offer a spectacular display of colour. There is also a gallery and a tearoom. Discounts are available for group bookings.
Ullswater Steamers - CA11 0US
about 11 Miles
This is an award winning Lake District attraction and they have been operating cruisers on Lake Ullswater for over 150 years.  There is no better way to explore the lakes than on water and you could even combine a cruise with a spectacular walk.  For great days out in this region then this attraction is highly recommended and will appeal to couples as well as families.  Corporate groups are also well catered for.
South Lakes Safari Zoo - LA12 0LU
about 15 Miles

This is an amazing Cumbria attraction well known locally as well as nationally for how close you can get to the animals.  Described as the most interactive animal park in Europe it's well worth a visit if you are staying in the area.  Open from April to end October some of the highlights are the tigers, penguins, bears, hippos and rhinos.  At 2pm during certain seasons it's feeding time so don't forget to plan your day around this so you can watch the animals enjoying their feed.  Look out for seasonal events such as Halloween Zoo Boo (free entry for kids in fancy dress) and The Magic of Christmas.

Lakeland Wildlife Oasis - LA6 1JH
about 18 Miles
Located in the Milnthorpe area of Cumbria we love this local attraction.  With an eclectic mix of fascinating wildlife and hands on displays this centre is educational as well as fun.  You can wander around at leisure admiring the exhibits which range from chameleons to computers. Some of the most threatened species are kept at the park as part if international breeding programmes.  Check out their website for the latest opening times and admission costs which are great value for money.  There are discounts for pre-booked parties of 12 or more.
Lake District Wildlife Park - CA12 4RD
about 21 Miles
We love this day out in Cumbria where you're encouraged to "take a fresh look".  Some of the amazing animals you will get to see include the only Canadian Lynx in the UK and you will have the opportunity to help their Lynx Conservation Project.  The Asian Fishing Cat is also well worth a look - these cats are known for diving under the water and catching fish!  Other activities include fantastic flying displays and play areas for the little ones...
Happy Mount Park - LA4 5AQ
about 22 Miles
Happy Mount Park has attractions for the whole family including several play areas, a miniature railway, crazy golf, putting green and trampolines, there is also a paddling pool where the little ones can splash around in the summer and a café where the adults can relax with a drink. During the summer months and especially during school holidays live music can often be enjoyed.
