Because the days here are long, breezy and gloriously muddy, and nothing beats warm water when you get back. Your dog gets mile after mile of sand, forest and moorland. You get a soak while they dry off by the fire. Better still, the council only restricts dogs on parts of two beaches in summer, so you’re rarely planning around a ban. It’s a scenic, easy-going corner of England, and a hot tub holiday here works in January just as well as in July.

Want a city day as well as the sea? Dreams & Streams and Beach Cove View are both a short drive from Morpeth. Humford Mill Cottage sits just outside Bedlington, and Whittle Dene is about 25 minutes from the centre of Newcastle.
Just the two of you, and the dog? Dreams & Streams has two bathrooms and countryside views, so it’s roomy for a couple. Over the border in County Durham, Pheasant Lodge at Wood House sleeps two, with a wood-fired hot tub, a fire pit and room for one pet.
Yes, on almost all of them. The council’s summer restrictions (1 May to 30 September) only cover sections at Newbiggin and Blyth, and at Beadnell you’ll need a short lead round the tern colony.

We’d say no. The water’s treated with chemicals and claws can tear the seats and cover, so leave your dog snoozing in the garden or on the decking while you soak.
