Boutique retreats Newquay: what makes them worth booking?
Newquay has some good boutique hotels, and they’re great for a night or two. But a boutique hotel gives you a room and someone else’s breakfast. A boutique cottage gives you the whole place: your own front door, a kitchen to cook the day’s catch in, and a hot tub that nobody else has sat in that morning.

If you can’t decide, stay just outside town. You’ll get the quiet nights and the stars over the hot tub, and you’re still only a short drive from the coast.
Hot tub holidays in Newquay: the beaches to plan around
Newquay has more good stretches of sand than most towns twice its size, and a hot tub is the perfect way to warm up after the Atlantic.
Fistral Beach
This is the big one. West-facing and framed by two headlands, Fistral hosts major surfing competitions and has RNLI lifeguards from Easter to the end of October, according to Cornish Secrets. It’s also dog-friendly all year round. Grab lunch at The Fish House overlooking the waves, where chef Paul Harwood (who trained under Rick Stein) changes the menu daily depending on the catch.
Watergate Bay and Porth Beach
Watergate Bay is two miles of soft sand just north of town, with the Extreme Academy on the sand offering surfing, kitesurf and waveski lessons. A few miles further north, Mawgan Porth is a smaller, sheltered cove that’s worth the drive. Closer in, Porth Beach is narrow and sheltered, with a stream for little ones to paddle in. Do check the dates if you’re bringing a dog, as Porth has a seasonal daytime ban from 15 May to 30 September.
Crantock and the Gannel
Cross the Gannel estuary from Pentire and you reach a National Trust beach backed by tall dunes that stays surprisingly quiet even in summer. Lifeguards warn against swimming near the river flow, as the currents can be dangerous at certain stages of the tide. West Pentire headland above it is known for its wild flowers and makes a brilliant coastal walk.
Dog rules for Cornwall’s beaches are set by the council’s Public Spaces Protection Order. Cornwall Council consulted on the 2026 to 2028 order and proposed keeping the current rules, so it’s worth checking the council’s dogs on beaches page before you go. Towan, Great Western and Tolcarne Beach
Right below the town centre, these three join up at low tide. Tolcarne Beach is reached down over 200 steps, so it’s worth it for the rock pools and sheltered swimming but tough with a pushchair.

- Newquay Zoo in Trenance Gardens covers 13 acres, with red pandas, sloths, penguins and otters
- Blue Reef Aquarium sits right on Towan Beach and is a handy wet weather plan
- Lappa Valley at St Newlyn East has steam train rides, a boating lake and woodland walks, and it’s dog-friendly
- Trerice, the National Trust’s Elizabethan manor a few miles out of town, opens from March
- The Huer’s Hut on Towan Headland, a stone lookout where a huer once shouted “hevva, hevva” when the pilchards arrived. Most of Cornwall’s huers’ huts were wooden, so this one is a rare survivor
Where to eat and drink
For dinner with views over the ocean, The Lewinnick Lodge sits on the cliffs of Pentire Headland with floor-to-ceiling windows, and well-behaved dogs are welcome in the bar. Every September, the Newquay Fish Festival takes over the harbour with cookery demonstrations from local chefs, stalls and live music.
The Eden Project is around 20 miles away if you fancy a full day out.
Getting to Newquay
Most guests drive to their hot tub accommodation down the A30, which crosses Cornwall from the end of the M5 at Exeter. Allow about two hours from Exeter in normal traffic, and longer on a summer Saturday.
The train is a good alternative. Newquay is the end of the Atlantic Coast Line from Par, and Great Western Railway runs an hourly local service from May 2026, with some summer through trains from London Paddington. Cornwall Airport Newquay is also just a few miles from town.

Are hot tub holidays in Newquay good for dogs?

When is the best time for a hot tub break in Newquay?
For a short break, late spring and September are lovely, with warmer seas, the Fish Festival and fewer crowds than August. Winter in Cornwall is great too. That’s when a hot tub under a clear sky really comes into its own.
