About The Heronry

The Heronry is a stone-built retreat settled into the countryside of Carwinley near Longtown, Cumbria, with the ideal blend of romantic country cottage and contemporary style. The Heronry, which is close to the Lake District and the beautiful Scottish Borders and within striking distance of Carlisle, Hadrian's Wall and Gretna Green, marries contemporary style with period charm.

Perfect for a couple who want to spend some quality time together or to celebrate a very special occasion, this lovely property is situated in the courtyard of the owner's Grade II listed mill house. This truly is a fabulous romantic getaway at any time of year.

The Heronry is a single-storey barn conversion that has been beautifully finished to an extremely high standard, with underfloor heating throughout and floor to ceiling windows at the rear overlooking the beck. The spacious open-plan living area has lovely views over the beck - all the better to see the heron who is a frequent visitor - and is lavishly furnished.

The kitchen is delightfully appointed with everything you need to produce gourmet meals using the superb local produce. The super-king-size bedroom has a fantastic floor to ceiling picture window and a chaise longue to take in the views, while the en-suite bathroom definitely has the wow factor with a stand alone bath and a picture window for tranquil bathing.

The Heronry has all the opulence of a boutique hotel with the seclusion of a private residence. There's a patio with seating at the front of the cottage and a further seating area down by Carwinley Beck, where you can observe the local birds and wildlife in this tranquil spot.

At night this area is illuminated, creating a fabulous spot for an evening drink after a busy day sightseeing. For the ultimate in relaxation, there's also a private hot tub available for your use.

Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery - CA3 8TP
about 10 Miles
This is a museum and art gallery in one and will suit those looking for an educational and cultural day out.  You can explore the fantastic art collection including Fine Art, Decorative Art and Textiles.  If you love nature then this aspect of Tullie House will appeal. The museum holds large and important collections of zoological, botanical and geological material. And for lovers of history there is plenty to wet your appetite here. Tullie House collects a wide range of historic materials including objects, ephemera (printed material), photographs and associated information files.  We think this museum and art gallery are excellent value for money as well.
Kielder Water Bird of Prey Centre - NE48 1BT
about 18 Miles
Housing the most fascinating collection of Birds of Prey in the North East this centre is definitely worth a visit if you are staying in the Kielder Water area. Located in Falstone it's easy to get to and makes a great day out for both families and couples.  As well as seeing the amazing birds you can learn all about the captive breeding programme and the excellent work being done there.  Some of the highlights of the day might include watching a Falcon stoop down from the skies at over 100mph and admiring the grace of the Eagles, Kites and Hawks.
Lake District Wildlife Park - CA12 4RD
about 27 Miles
We love this day out in Cumbria where you're encouraged to "take a fresh look".  Some of the amazing animals you will get to see include the only Canadian Lynx in the UK and you will have the opportunity to help their Lynx Conservation Project.  The Asian Fishing Cat is also well worth a look - these cats are known for diving under the water and catching fish!  Other activities include fantastic flying displays and play areas for the little ones...
Mabie Farm Park - DG2 8EZ
about 27 Miles

Ideal for families with younger children ,this family oriented farm park has lots of animals to meet and also offers Donkey Rides, Paddle Boats and Slides as well as Trampolines and Bouncy Castles. Kids can run around on the Soft Play Area while mum and dad relax in the Tea Room. There is also a Farm Shop onsite selling toys, gifts and fresh local produce including cakes and jams.
