About Borough House

Make memories to last a lifetime in this exceptional period property in the heart of Whitby. Set across four floors, the spacious holiday home boasts vast social spaces, all bursting with character and period charm.

The property is set in Whitby’s old town, and you’ll be surrounded by beautiful cobbled streets and independent shops and restaurants. The town has four sandy beaches, your nearest – Tate Hill Beach - being just 200 metres away.

The 400-year-old family home is bursting with period features, including elegant wood panelling, stunning stained-glass windows, beamed ceilings, and exposed stonework. The characterful low entrance leads to a quarry-tiled hallway and into the stunning kitchen/diner.

The space is heated by a cosy wood burner set in an inglenook fireplace, and the kitchen area has everything you need to cater for the group. Gather around the large wooden dining table for evenings of delicious food and laughter.

A handy utility room completes this floor. Upstairs, you’ll find the magnificent lounge, with panelled walls, an eclectic mix of plush furniture, and a Smart TV/DVD.

The first of the bedrooms – a twin – is also on this floor. Heading upstairs again, you’ll find a gorgeous family bathroom with a claw-foot bath and a king-size bedroom with an en-suite shower room.

On the top floor are two adjoining bedrooms – a king-size and a single – connected via an open doorway. Due to the age of the property, you can expect to experience restricted head height in some areas.

There is no outside space with this property. Stroll out of your front door and join the 199 steps that lead to the iconic clifftop ruins of Whitby Abbey.

This evocative structure is said to have inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula and is a magical spot to enjoy a sunset stroll, soaking up the history and admiring the panoramic sea views. From the Abbey, you can easily join The Cleveland Way coastal walk, which leads to the smugglers’ haunt of Robin Hood’s Bay, 6 miles away.

Borough House Reviews

Douglas
The cottage has that old worldy feel about it but at the same time modern in places , the decor is fantastic and gives the feeling of tradition, the kitchen fire is in need of some TLC to get more heat out but the owners left plenty of logs they are very very good at the small details that help make the house welcoming, the welcome hamper was a touch of absolute class it was huge and plenty basics like coffee /tea /milk they have everything covered. Overall itâ??s the best accommodation we have stayed in the location is perfect for wandering around Whitby every amenitie on your doorstep. If your looking for a climbing staircase free house this isnâ??t for you , but again the owners have done a wonderful job of the house comfortable/clean every thing you need is there. Loved it.

Lovely house which was very well equipped, plenty of room for our family of 5 adults and 1 baby. The owner was so helpful and left a welcome hamper which was appreciated by all. The location is central but as down a small passage we were not affected by noise. Loading and unloading is difficult on church street but we knew this prior to arriving and made sure to unload after 6pm when the street quietens down. Beds and sofas were comfortable.

A hidden gem in the heart of Whitby! Despite a few dated negative reviews online, Borough House turned out to be ideal for two adults, three teens, and our dog. Nestled just off a bustling street, the house offers surprising peace and privacy, with quirky rooms across four floorsâ??perfect warm-up for the famous 199 steps! A lovely welcome pack greeted us and the kitchen/dining area and lounge were fantastic for family time, with TVs equipped for streaming and DVDs. Though advertised as three bedrooms, the extra single off the loft was a great bonus. Parking isnâ??t onsite, but we planned ahead and used Abbey Car Park (about 7â??8 minutes on foot). Parking scratch cards were provided, though we didnâ??t use them. Communication was excellent, and the owner kindly offered an early check-in. Minor issues with roof blinds were noted, but didnâ??t spoil our stay. We had a brilliant weekend and would love to return.

Lovely cosy cottage right in the heart of the old town. We loved staying there, it was a great place to come back to relax in after being out walking. Very large and comfortable living room and it was appreciated that the owners left some logs for the wood burner in the kitchen/dining room. We had a lovely stay in Whitby, helped by amazing weather and wonderful walks.

We had an amazing time at Borough House. A great house in the middle of the old part of town but tucked away from the crowds and noise. We loved being able to step out to the shops and explore without having to use the car. We had great weather and most days would eat our lunches overlooking the harbour - just a stone's throw from the front door. The beds are very comfortable with excellent linen and everywhere was incredibly clean and tidy. The rooms are very large - given the position of the house. The bathroom is up some stairs - but not much more than at home. My 86 year old Mum managed ok. We are all a little fitter than we were - which is a good thing! I highly recommend Borough House. Thank you for a great stay - and the wonderful welcome basket!

We loved our stay. Amazing location - literally 2 mins walk from the 199 steps up to the Abbey. But yet very quiet at night time. And very comfortable inside (especially the living room). Would highly recommend.

This property is in an amazing location in Whitby, the house is very spacious, and very well equipped - it oozes the character of an old house. The owner was very generous to ensure our stay was the best it could be, including a lovely welcome pack. We canâ??t wait to return & have already recommended this property to friends.

We had a glorious holiday in a beautiful 16th century cottage in Whitby. Just stunning! I can honestly say the owners went above & beyond to make our stay very special. Everything was just outstanding. We will definitely be booking another holiday in the future.
William
Excellent property, we have been doing our family get together now for 16 years and this was the best property by far.
