Thompson Rigg House Reviews

Beautiful family home with lovely hosts. Fabulous location & very friendly donkeys to feed.
Audrey
Our stay at Thompson Rigg House was simply fantastic. We have stayed in many cottages, barns and holiday properties across the UK over the years, but this was by far the best. It truly is a hidden gem in the middle of nowhere! The drive through Dalby Forest on the way to the property is beautiful in itself, with picturesque woodland scenery all around you, but nothing quite prepares you for the views when you arrive. Waking up each morning to the most amazing views over the forest was unforgettable. It is one of those places where you can simply sit, look outside and feel completely at peace. The property itself was exceptionally clean, comfortable and incredibly well equipped. It genuinely feels like a home away from home, and it is obvious that the owners have thought of absolutely everything. There were also books, games, cookbooks, maps, leaflets, binoculars, a hairdryer and so many little touches that made our stay easy and enjoyable. Nothing felt forgotten. The owners Helen and Alan are lovely, very welcoming and extremely helpful. They live on the grounds, so they are always there if you need anything, yet you have complete privacy and never feel overlooked. It is the perfect balance. The surroundings were another highlight. During our stay we encountered sheep, deer, squirrels and pheasants, and we loved having Olaf the cat and Chevy the sheep around the property. They became little characters of our holiday! We also had the pleasure of feeding the donkeys, which was such a lovely experience. The location is also perfect for exploring North Yorkshire. We visited Scarborough, where we enjoyed the Market Hall and Vaults, independent shops, a sweet shop, a lovely stroll along the seafront and of course fish and chips. We also visited Whitby which was busier but very enjoyable, with a lovely walk around the bay and Whitby Abbey overlooking everything from above. We stopped for a sundae too which made the visit even better! We also enjoyed the walk at Ravenscar hoping to spot the colony of seals. We didn't manage to see them as the path was closed due to a landslip, but the walk itself was beautiful, with wonderful fresh sea air and spectacular coastal scenery. We even ended up having the loveliest chat with a local resident which made the experience feel particularly special. ThorntonleDale was another favourite, such a quaint little village with an ice cream shop selling the most delicious ice cream! But ultimately, it was the property itself and the peace and tranquillity of the surroundings that made this holiday so special. There is something magical about being surrounded by forest, wildlife and complete quiet, while still having everything you could possibly need. Thompson Rigg House is one of those rare places that you leave already wishing you could stay a little longer. A truly special property, with wonderful owners, beautiful surroundings and so many unforgettable little moments. We absolutely loved our stay and we would return in a heartbeat.
Absolutely beautiful place in a stunning, peaceful location. Even the drive in was lovely, through the beautiful surrounding countryside, and really set the tone for the stay. The property had everything we needed and was really well equipped throughout. The hot tub was a fantastic bonus and perfect for relaxing in the evenings. We especially loved how quiet and secluded it was a proper peaceful getaway where you could completely switch off. We had a brilliant stay and would definitely recommend it. Wed happily come back again!
What an absolutely fantastic place! We had a wonderful week away here and we were blessed with beautiful weather which made it even more fantastic. Each morning, wed wake up and sit outside with a cup of tea looking at the stunning forest view. You could have easily believed you were abroad! We saw deer, pheasants and rabbits during our stay but the main attraction were the four donkeys and Chevvy the sheep. Our daughter absolutely loved nipping to stroke and see the animals each day.not to mention Olaf the cat who is the friendliest cat weve ever met. The house was 1010. It had plenty of amenities and we instantly felt at home. The beds were really comfortable and our whole party 4 adults and a child commented that theyd slept well each night. The place is certainly a testament to the owners. The hot tub was also fantasticeven in the hot weather! There were plenty of family games to play and the everywhere was lovely and spacious. We were welcomed straight away by the owners who live on site and the welcome basket was a lovely surprise. The owners were very knowledgable about the area and friendly to talk to. We couldnt have been happier with our stay and we would certainly look to book again. We could have easily stayed for another week. Thank you for sharing your beautiful property with us.

First class welcome, excellent accommodation, spotlessly clean, very well equipped. Alan and Helen were also friendly and very helpful with local information. Would highly recommend.
A delightful, spacious, well appointed, extremely cosy and comfortable house nestled in the heart of the most beautiful countryside. Hosts Alan and Helen are very welcoming and generous and are on site if needed. It is immersed in wonderful wildlife and scenery and a real escape from it all. A wonderful enjoyable experience which left us wanting to go back for more.
Fabulous stay at Thompson Rigg, very well appointed house, everything exceptionally clean and comfortable. Plenty of room to relax both inside and out. Set in beautiful country side with great walks from the door. Remote with access off farm tracks and no shopspubs near by so come prepared with your food but for us that was the attraction.
Absolutely incredible, will definitely be staying there again. Amazing hosts, the most beautiful setting and an unbelievable house. All my family loved it and want us to book for a longer stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday at Thompson Rigg House. A friendly welcome on arrival, very well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and a hot tub with powerful jets! Loads of soft, fluffy towels too! The property is remote and we loved that aspect. Truly, a get away from it all break to recharge the batteries. Thank you.
Everything was perfect and exactly as advertised. Lovely friendly hosts amazing cottage and location. Very happy.
Rebecca
Absolutely beautiful property in a stunning location. The cottage exceeded expectations, it had everything you could want and more. Spotlessly clean. Loved feeding the donkeys we miss saying hello to Buddy!! Slept so well whilst there so relaxing! The outdoor area was lovely with a wood burner and hot tub perfect way to spend an evening looking at the clear sky. It may be remote but that's part of its beauty.
Victoria
Lovely well equipped, comfortable and clean house in a beautiful and peaceful setting. Our children loved feeding the donkeys and sheep and splashing in the hot tub. The owners Alan & Helen are very kind, friendly, welcoming and hospitable. Lots of good things to do in the area. We hope to be back!

A beautiful property in a beautiful location! Hosts were friendly and welcoming! We had a wonderful week, the cottage had everything we needed and more. The hottub was lovely and nothing beat sitting and relaxing in the garden with our morning coffee, listening to the birds and animals that surrounded us. Our daughter especially loved the friendly donkeys and sheep that were on the doorstep! She even wanted to bring them home! A great location for peace and tranquility, exploring the Forest or getting to towns like Whitby and Scarborough
We have had such a wonderful stay at Thompson Rigg and have already recommended it to friends. We would certainly visit again and hope to get there soon. If you enjoy peace and quiet and escape from all the busy, this is the place for you. Enjoy the Moors, the hot tub and the beautiful Dalby Forest. Helen and Alan are wonderful hosts who give you space but are there should you need themthey went above and beyond for us to make our stay wonderful for a special birthday. Thank you.
What a fabulous week we had at Thompson Rigg House. This amazing property was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed for a super experience. Our hosts Alan and Helen were very helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The last 10 miles of the journey was through Dalby forest drive ending on a stone track for about a mile and a half with a shallow ford 100m from the house. This was a brilliant drive, quite an adventure adding to the holiday experience. Walk about 50m from the property and you are on Thompson's Rigg, National Trust, what a lovely walk. The hot tub was very welcome to relax in after a busy day. All in all a fantastic place to stay in. If I could, I would give it 10 stars!!
Victoria
