The Byre Reviews

Brendan
The Byre was very homely and comfortable ,we had everything we needed for a wonderful holiday in Milton , with Brampton just a short drive away, would recommend this peaceful getaway.
Overall the property was comfortable, warm and the owner very helpful with the WiFi issue an external outage so not the owner's fault. However, there were a few snags that merit mentioning. Firstly, there isn't welcome pack with instructions on how to use the cooker, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, shower or storage heaters. Also the few tourism leaflets in the property were very out of date What's On for 2021, 2022 etc. Some of the takeaway menus were for local restaurants no longer trading. The hot tap in the bathroom washbasin was extremely loose and had to be controlled with two hands to prevent possible detachment from the pipe. A pool of water underneath the basin was also apparent from leakage. The taps in the kitchen area were also very loose and had to handled very gingerly. The mirror in the open plan area was very dirty but we cleaned that ourselves. There was a dirty, wine stained glass in the cupboard and no corkscrew or scissors in the kitchen utensils. Would we stay there again? Actually, yes we would. The negatives listed could be addressed very easily and the accommodation would be a lovely welcoming place for short stays. Martin & Mandy Ellison
Very nice place Clean tidy and warn Would go back anytime

Lovely, cosy cottage with everything you need. Nice quiet place with the occasional train passing through, but did not disturb us. A 2 minute drive took us to Miltonrigg woods, where the dogs loved running about between the trees. We even saw a squirrel jumping up in the trees !! We will definitely be returning as we had the most relaxed stay. I would highly recommend to others, especially if you're looking for a tranquil & peaceful break.

Home after a lovely week stay at the Byre. Cottage was very comfortable and cosy. The entrance to the cottages is quite concealed from the road, maybe better signage would help? The second bedroom with twin beds had no storage, although they was plenty of storage in the main bedroom which compensated. This was not a problem for my mum and I to share the wardrobe and draws but if it was a different combination of people staying in the cottage maybe could be an issue. The cottage was lovely and warm, the storage heaters provided adequate heat and we didn't need to use the log burner. However the storage heater in the smaller bedroom did not work, again not an issue for us during our stay, but as the temperatures drop may cause an issue for other guests. TV reception kept pixelating. This could be because we arrived during storm Amy. Contacted the hosts and they managed to source an alternative indoor Ariel which sorted the issue and was appreciated. Couple of minor snags, the shower hose leaked towards the shower head, the can opener provided did not work, the kitchen tap was quite loose and maybe a welcome book explaining how things worked etc might be helpful. The bedding and towels were of good quality and beds comfortable. Would certainly recommend and come back again in the future.
We had a wonderful stay at The Byre. We had a bit of trouble with tv reception which was rapidly dealt with by our lovely hosts. Thank you so much.
Excellent cottage exactly as described. Stayed a week, would have happily stayed longer. Lovely and helpful owner. Great area, lots of museums, ruins, walks and friendly villages to visit. We enjoyed it so much we are considering returning for a mini break.

Overall I was fine but due to the weather the electric heaters were not covering a proper temperature at night in the bedrooms.

Thank you for having us to stay with you. Firstly, the location of the cottage is brilliant, we were able to explore Northumberland, the North Lake District, Hadrian's Wall and surrounding areas just as we had expected. Unfortunately, there were some niggles with the property there were only storage heaters which it was really difficult to control the temperature with, we tried turning them off at the wall but they were still pumping out heat hours later, and then because of the size of the ceilings, didn't always warm the rooms very well. The taps in both the kitchen and the bathroom were broken, although useable. Although the main thoroughfares were clean, there were finer detailed areas that would have benefitted from some closer attention such as the soap dish in the shower and under the bed. It would also have been nice to have an information pack on arrival containing things such as local places to eat, the WiFi code although this information is on the router, local shops, local first aid information, places to visit etc. Having said that, we were greeted personally by the owner of the property I think by chance who kindly passed on some of this information. Despite all of this, it was lovely to have an enclosed garden for our poochie, and we really enjoyed the open fire in the property. The biggest plus was the cost of the property we would usually expect to pay for a week, the price that we paid for 9 nights, so this was a big bonus. If the little niggles were sorted, this would be the perfect package. Thanks again.

Lovely stay . Didnt use hot tub as water needed changing but apart from that everything was good. Would stay again

We had an amazing break at The Byre. The cottage was cosy and very clean. Its a nice gateaway from the busy city life, our kids enjoyed talking to the sheeps and playing outside. The fireplace is a great upgrade to chill at the evening. Highly recommend it. We makes sure to come again. Thank you

One of the taps in the bathroom didn't work but otherwise a lovely cottage

What a lovely place. We stayed in The Byres & had a smashing time. Very clean & tidy with everything you need to enjoy a break. A vacuum cleaner would be an added bonus to be able to keep it clean & tidy during your stay. The dog proof garden was an absolute godsend. We will visit again.

We have stayed at this location before, in Swallows Cottage. We booked the Byre, whilst a new boiler was being fitted at our home. This accommodation is ideally located and is close to both Northumberland and the Lake District. Accommodation was clean, homely and comfortable. We enjoyed our stay and after a days exploring, relaxed in our surroundings. Dog friendly too, for the little feller and his first holiday. Would stay again and recommend to others. Thank you to the Ackerley's.
Steven
The property was warm and comfortable, every thing was there that was needed. Some great walks from the location and the local village of Brampton had all you needed from shops, post offices, pub etc. The owners were also great when the were any questions.
Joanne
Lovely cottage, and host. Good, quiet location with plenty to do near by.
Michelle
Great location very close to Hadrians wall , short drive to the Lake District. The cottage was clean and homely with everything you would need. We had a dog with us and the garden was secure for him. The people I spoke to about check in were very friendly and advised that we could could call them if we needed anything.

Whilst the cottage has everything needed to cook etc, it lies on a very busy and noisy road. Were used to that so it didnt bother us. To my mind new mattresses are required on all beds, the singles especially, and a new duvet on the king size bed. The outside balcony has wire mesh on the wooden base. I kept tripping over it as it lifted at the edge in places. Also the side wooden fence on the balcony is not safe as it moves. It wouldnt take much for someone to lean on it and it gives way. In general the cottage is adequate but is tired and in need of a refurb.
The cottage was very nice. Spacious rooms, nice and comfortable big bed and large TV. It was in a good location close to a lot of nice areas for dog walking and sight seeing. One minor complaint was that the provision of DVD player and radio were advertised but not available and we were told we had Netflix on a smart TV. However for the first 3 days we could not access it. The owners were very helpful and once it had been sorted it was a reasonable replacement. We would suggest details are updated on your site.
Internet did not work , but owner was helpful to make it work for us. The Toilet flush handle did not funtion proper, took some doing put managed to make it work , just was a stuggle each time. Everything else was very good, lots of room , Clean , owner was helpful,
Comfortable and convenient location with very hospitable host. Well equipped and furnished. Lovely rural setting.
The cottage was well equipped and spotlessly clean. Beds were very comfortable and we especially appreciated the large fridge freezer as we did a lot of our own cooking given the current situation. The dishwasher was therefore also very welcome! Mabel made sure we were happy with everything and she gave some wonderful advice on where to visit locally. The location is also superb, we explored all around the Sollway Estuary both on the English and Scottish side and both Carlisle and Dumfries are easy drives from here. The nearby town of Brampton is also a delightful place. We look forward to coming back!
Very beautiful cottage we all loved it. Very chilled out and loads to do inside cottage. Hot tub was great but could of been better if all jets worked. Other than that I couldn't complain. We will be returning
We really enjoyed our stay here, the owners were very helpful, giving some nice places to visit, where our puppy would enjoy a walk, and most likely go back!
Just got back from a fabulous few days away at The Byre. Easy to find and lots of parking available. We were shown straight to our cottage and the lady was very informative about the surrounding area and which places to visit. Cottage was lovely, clean and cosy. Perfect for dogs as the garden was very enclosed. We will definitely be back.
We had a fantastic holiday weekend at this beautiful cottage. The cottage itself was cosy, beautifully decorated, spotless clean and to top it all had a lovely wood burning fire. Fantastic location for exploring Hadrians Wall and Roman Ruins, and great walks for taking my dog Storm exploring. Will definitely be back next summer and might even try out the hot tub next time. Thank you for a wonderful weekend.
We loved it! Great location to head off to the rest of the Lakes and up to Scotland. Cottage is nice, clean and spacious. Having our own enclosed garden was perfect to our dog. Kitchen is well equipped. Owners were very helpful. We will be back next year! Good dining options within a few miles. WiFi is good, smart TV was a bonus.
Very comfortable, private and cosy cottage with enclosed garden which was great for our dog. Location is fantastic for all things Hadrian's Wall, Carlisle and gorgeous countryside and there are plenty of other attractions if you get time. Would like to go back there again.
Excellent cottage and facilities. The pictures on the site do not really do it justice, the cottage was much larger and more attractive, inside and out, than we expected. The owners were really friendly and helpful and made us feel really welcome. The location is excellent for walking and history, Hadrians wall is almost on your doorstep and the surrounding countryside is really stunning. We would recommend the cottage and the location to anybody.
Cottage was wonderful made a grate base for exploring Only thing missing was a ... Cottage was wonderful made a grate base for exploring Only thing missing was a vacume so that we could tidy up before we left

Attractions Near The Byre

While there'll be plenty to keep you entertained at The Byre itself, if you plan to get out and about and see some of what Northumberland has to offer, here are some of the nearby attractions you can enjoy during your stay. Please note that some of these activities and days out are paid and it's always a good idea to book in advance to secure your place where applicable.

Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery - CA3 8TP
about 10 Miles
This is a museum and art gallery in one and will suit those looking for an educational and cultural day out.  You can explore the fantastic art collection including Fine Art, Decorative Art and Textiles.  If you love nature then this aspect of Tullie House will appeal. The museum holds large and important collections of zoological, botanical and geological material. And for lovers of history there is plenty to wet your appetite here. Tullie House collects a wide range of historic materials including objects, ephemera (printed material), photographs and associated information files.  We think this museum and art gallery are excellent value for money as well.
Kielder Water Bird of Prey Centre - NE48 1BT
about 18 Miles
Housing the most fascinating collection of Birds of Prey in the North East this centre is definitely worth a visit if you are staying in the Kielder Water area. Located in Falstone it's easy to get to and makes a great day out for both families and couples.  As well as seeing the amazing birds you can learn all about the captive breeding programme and the excellent work being done there.  Some of the highlights of the day might include watching a Falcon stoop down from the skies at over 100mph and admiring the grace of the Eagles, Kites and Hawks.
Lake District Wildlife Park - CA12 4RD
about 27 Miles
We love this day out in Cumbria where you're encouraged to "take a fresh look".  Some of the amazing animals you will get to see include the only Canadian Lynx in the UK and you will have the opportunity to help their Lynx Conservation Project.  The Asian Fishing Cat is also well worth a look - these cats are known for diving under the water and catching fish!  Other activities include fantastic flying displays and play areas for the little ones...
Ullswater Steamers - CA11 0US
about 29 Miles
This is an award winning Lake District attraction and they have been operating cruisers on Lake Ullswater for over 150 years.  There is no better way to explore the lakes than on water and you could even combine a cruise with a spectacular walk.  For great days out in this region then this attraction is highly recommended and will appeal to couples as well as families.  Corporate groups are also well catered for.
