Nearby Torver and Coniston offer country pubs and plenty of Lake District walking routes. The fine market town of Ulverston is also just 7 miles away, a labyrinth of cobbled streets, independent shops and some excellent eateries.

It is also the birthplace of Stan Laurel and home to the world’s only Laurel and Hardy museum. Perfectly located for discovering some of the less-trodden areas of the Lake District, Bracken Ground is a magical base for a break any time of the year.

Bracken Ground Reviews

This is an outstanding property! Absolutely gorgeous inside and out, finished to a very high standard with every detail thought of. We are a family ranging from 4 75 years and everyone thoroughly enjoyed our stay.Thank you.

We loved every minute. Bracken Ground was just lovely, the house, the grounds are very well maintained and the both the hot tub and pizza oven got lots of use. The beds are extremely comfortable, and the bedding was blissful. Our group was 9, a mix of adults, teens, and kids. Can recommend the paddleboarding lessons at The Swan hotel, Newby Bridge, we did lots of walking and lake activities and it was a joy to return to the solitude and comfort at Bracken Ground. Thanks.

The property was lovely, really nice. In the words of my friend, better than the pictures, and the pictures were nice. The house was really well equipped with everything we could want. It was a very pleasant place to be for a week. Just 2 small points. First is that the directions could be clearer. The property is tricky to find and we spent ages getting there. We thought that it is easiest to get there by starting from the centre of Spark Bridge, over the river, 2nd little road on the left. Left at the next junction, through Colton, left at the sign and then follow the windy road uphill. Second bit of feedback, was we had got up early for a last chill int he hot tub before departing. But the maintenance chap had emptied it and was refilling it with cold water. He shouldn't do that before check out time.
Bracken Ground is a very thoughtfully well put together holiday property in an absolutely stunning location. We really enjoyed our stay, we adored the sauna and hot tub after exploring the beautiful grounds and even saw a deer run across the garden. Relaxing in the lounge in front of that glorious fire after a day of adventuring was such a treat. Our only real issue with the property was the hot tub maintenance, it was cold 20 degrees when we arrived at 4.30pm, not ideal when stood all excited in your bikini after a long drive up there. Then the maintenance van visited at least three times, at least twice pulling up to park right by the bedroom windows with the radio blaring out which seemed very disrespectful of the occupants, especially having paid for a relaxing and restful holiday this happened at 7.30am on the Friday of our break. On the last day the guy came and started faffing with the hot tub at around 8.30, it was a little disruptive and gave a sense of 'off you go' on what was our last little bit of time there. Also as previous occupants have mentioned the knives are in desperate need of a sharpen. Otherwise everything was perfect. We have fallen in love with the Lake District.

Fanatic stay, would highly recommend, could benefit from different heating settings within the bathrooms as these were cold in the mornings one of the showers was not working at all, but this didnt really effect us as there was only me and my husband staying at the property. Hot tub maintenance impressive with 3 checks within a 7day stay, sauna good, could potentially do with fenced in closed in area to stop any incidents with the pond, we used some outside patio chairs by the kitchen doors to prohibit the dogs going on the grass mud or the pond, To help keep the place clean.tv signal in the master bedroom did not work, but we did bring an Amazon tv stick which solved this. We also bought 7 blankets, rugs and throws to keep floors and sofas clean. Overwhelming food package on arrival, this was a lovely touch, could also not fault the amount of kitchen equipment available for everything you could possibly need for your stay. Nice daily visit from the local sheep

South Lakes Safari Zoo - LA12 0LU
about 8 Miles

This is an amazing Cumbria attraction well known locally as well as nationally for how close you can get to the animals.  Described as the most interactive animal park in Europe it's well worth a visit if you are staying in the area.  Open from April to end October some of the highlights are the tigers, penguins, bears, hippos and rhinos.  At 2pm during certain seasons it's feeding time so don't forget to plan your day around this so you can watch the animals enjoying their feed.  Look out for seasonal events such as Halloween Zoo Boo (free entry for kids in fancy dress) and The Magic of Christmas.

Rydal Mount & Gardens - LA22 9LU
about 12 Miles
Rydal Mount & Gardens are wonderfully situated between Lake Windermere and Rydal Water offering breathtaking scenery. The home of William Wordsworth from 1813 - 1850 the grand home is now lived in by the poets descendents but parts of the house and grounds are open to the public. Why not take a guided tour and see the rooms where many of the famous poems were written. The gardens are beautiful at all times of the year but in the summer offer a spectacular display of colour. There is also a gallery and a tearoom. Discounts are available for group bookings.
Lakeland Wildlife Oasis - LA6 1JH
about 14 Miles
Located in the Milnthorpe area of Cumbria we love this local attraction.  With an eclectic mix of fascinating wildlife and hands on displays this centre is educational as well as fun.  You can wander around at leisure admiring the exhibits which range from chameleons to computers. Some of the most threatened species are kept at the park as part if international breeding programmes.  Check out their website for the latest opening times and admission costs which are great value for money.  There are discounts for pre-booked parties of 12 or more.
Happy Mount Park - LA4 5AQ
about 16 Miles
Happy Mount Park has attractions for the whole family including several play areas, a miniature railway, crazy golf, putting green and trampolines, there is also a paddling pool where the little ones can splash around in the summer and a café where the adults can relax with a drink. During the summer months and especially during school holidays live music can often be enjoyed.
Ullswater Steamers - CA11 0US
about 19 Miles
This is an award winning Lake District attraction and they have been operating cruisers on Lake Ullswater for over 150 years.  There is no better way to explore the lakes than on water and you could even combine a cruise with a spectacular walk.  For great days out in this region then this attraction is highly recommended and will appeal to couples as well as families.  Corporate groups are also well catered for.
Lake District Wildlife Park - CA12 4RD
about 28 Miles
We love this day out in Cumbria where you're encouraged to "take a fresh look".  Some of the amazing animals you will get to see include the only Canadian Lynx in the UK and you will have the opportunity to help their Lynx Conservation Project.  The Asian Fishing Cat is also well worth a look - these cats are known for diving under the water and catching fish!  Other activities include fantastic flying displays and play areas for the little ones...
