The Old Red Lion Reviews

Beverley
The recycling and household waste wheelie bins were full when we arrived with further black bags on the ground outside the property. Not a great first impression. Anxious this may lead to vermin and litter during our stay. The property is as advertised. Spacious and equipped.
Stephanie
The property upon arrival looked very picturesque. However upon entering, it was very dusty, full of cobwebs, plus the skirting boards and windows have not been cleaned for months. The carpets clearly had not been vacuumed before our arrival. The kitchen area was not as clean as we would expect for the price we were paying, it was cleaned way better when we left than when we arrived. The tables were dirty as when we wiped them down with new dishcloths they needed binning as they were black. In addition, the dishwasher did not work not good when theres 8 guests staying even though I had been informed 6 days earlier that they knew there was a problem and it would be rectified prior to our arrival. Some of the soft furnishings have seen better days and would be better off being removed from the property. There was rubbish bagged up outside on arrival which was being attacked by a local cat and spread all over. The actual rubbish bin was full to the brim with windfall apples which meant there was nowhere for us to place rubbish prior to leaving we could however, use the recycling bin. The upstairs was far cleaner apart from carpets. We were offered the chance to have someone come in and clean the Property on the Saturday night but this was not suitable to use, as one of our party is immuno surpressed and could not be near strangers. No one wants to acknowledge our issues even though they were raised on our return and to the cleaning manager whilst there. PS you also need a decent tin opener as the one in the house does not open tins! I never comment on problems but feel in this instance that as we have been ignored i will. This property could be amazing if it was cleaned properly.
Everything was pretty good but kitchen cupboards particularly the pan drawers ... Everything was pretty good but kitchen cupboards particularly the pan drawers were unclean and that put us off eating there
It was absolutely marvellous. So well equipped especially the kitchen. Lovely to have everyone in the family able to cook and eat together. So much space throughout the whole property. I would just mention that lots more coathangers would make it beyond perfect. I couldn't get your new app to work but not a problem We had great visits to beautiful Ely and to Wicken Fen and wish we'd had more than four nights. As two of our party live in Cambridge the swift train ride to Ely was a bonus.
An interesting, well equipped, old house in a picturesque village, but within very easy reach of Ely. The modern kitchen extension was lovely, although the low ceilings in the older part of the house might be a problem for anyone over 6 feet tall! The beds were extremely comfy, but the bedding, though clean, could have done with ironing. Some hooks for towels in the ensuite to the second bedroom would be useful in place of the wire rhino?! Also, more cushions for the outside furniture might be a good idea. However, these are all minor points, and in no way spoiled our holiday. In fact, if we were to visit the area again, I would certainly rebook The Old Red Lion.
A lovely, quiet stay in this clean, wellequipped rural cottage. Couldn't have asked for anything more except better weather.... An excellent base for many local walks and equally wellsited for a short drive to historic Ely. Plenty of wildlife about. Nice to open the front door and be greeted by one of the numerous pheasants just nonchalantly pecking away at the grass nearby. Would I return? Definitely!
The property was lovely, very clean and set in a very calm location. The beds are Comfortable and the rooms sizes were good for 8 adults. The hot tube was great and very clean and hot for when we arrived. The lay out of the property was lovely with a snug and lounge with tv and then a kitchen with a table to chat whilst cooking. We loved our stay and would recommend the property to all. It was location was great Cambridge was 20 minutes away and Ely 5 minutes away. Some good national trust places to visit. In Ely there is a great restaurant called Urban Fresh which we had dinner at twice. This was a great holiday and we would return as it was lovely. Thank you
Property was as advertised on website. All facilities very good. Property clean and well maintained when we arrived. Open plan kitchen dining area a lovely surprise with views on to garden. Plenty of space for 6 of us. Good lounge and utility area. Snug used as quiet area by people working. All bedrooms and ensuite facilities high standard and very comfortable. WiFi connection excellent. Ely and Cambridge very accessible. Would be very happy to return.
Id like to start by saying the property was wonderful! There were 7 of us and there was plenty of room, it never felt crowded! My favorite was sitting outside & listening to the birds. Very peaceful. There was ample seating for dinner and two living spaces we designated one for kids and one for grownups it was fantastic. The decor was adorable! And the bathrooms were phenomenal! An absolutely great space overall. Couple of recommendations for improvement would be the nespresso machine was missing the drip tray, one of the lights in the dining area constantly flickered, the freezer door was not attached to the cabinet, clear instructions on the washing machine would have been nice and finally some floor fans for the bed rooms were needed. We went out and bought our own because the upstairs was too hot to sleep. Would 100 stay here again!
Barbara
We had a great time, lovely cottage, modern up to date, down a quiet country lane. Convenient for Ely town, kids loved it too. Amazing! Would definitely go again.
Lovely house & location, really enjoyed by all that stayed there, worked so well with 2 families and children, kitchen was accommodating and spacious to entertain all. Two lounges meant the kids could breakout and have their own space. Bedrooms were of a good size with 2 having nice ensuites. Nice rural location but only a short drive from Ely, and Cambridge being close by. Would thoroughly recommend. Hot tub was a nice addition after a long day x
We felt the cottage was more suited to 6 people. Due to seating and crockery. Oven hob was a nightmare, settee was not comfortable. It was a little dark around the hot tub.The toilet in our bedroom wouldn't flush no water left in cistern. I have given this feedback as just a few improvements, would make it a brilliant holiday home . Just to say we did have a lovely time. The location was great for dog walking and nice local pubs.
Robert
We had a lovely time. The house is warm and comfortable. However, the hob and both ovens are nearly impossible to operate. The hob just requires a bit of dogged patience but the ovens are mindbendingly difficult, which severy impacted our ability to cook meals as planned. We diod follow the instructions in the manual but the actual circular selector particularly on the main oven does not work properly. You just have to bite the bullet and replace all 3 devices with one with more conventional controls. One more minor gripe was the lack of a dishcloth of course we were able to pop out to get one but a pack of Jcloths or similar would have been helpful.
We really enjoyed our stay, however there were some issues tht need to be addressed, we couldn't work the hob because the instructions were complicated, also the floor edges were a bit dodgy I kept tripping over them and actually slipped on the floor. Also something needs to be done about the gravel path to the hot tub as u cnt walk over that in bear feet. One more thing the previous tenants before us had left dog muck near the hot tub which smelt bad, we don't want to be blamed for it as we pick alfies pooh up at all times, Thnku
We stayed here for a week with our 4 kids from age 13 newborn, my mother in law and our dogs. This house suited all of us perfectly, our middle kids enjoyed the snug room, our eldest had a TV in his room, the adults enjoyed the patio and kitchen. We all spent time in the huge hot tub, particularly the kids! We played boardgames around the large dining table and watched movies on the living room sofa. Upstairs is so cosy and the beds were so comfy, I am going to buy the same duvets as these one of the single beds is only suitable for a child, I would say no older than 5 years old as the mattress isn't suitable for any older. The full length mirrors in the double rooms were really handy and the TV in the chimney breast room was appreciated by our eldest at night and early morning. The garden was brilliant for the dogs and the utility room useful for keeping their beds in, the downstairs toilet was useful for the kids in and out of the hot tub and for my mother in law as she can struggle using the stairs too much. There were only a couple of things that could do with adressing but it didn't affect our holiday at all. Maybe provide hand wash in the bathrooms and kitchen, we just went and bought some so not an issue. More tea towels would have been useful, again not a problem. Salt and pepper would have been a bonus, other places we have stayed have always provided these along with other herbs and spices. I think it would be beneficial to lay a strip of artificial grass from the hot tub to the back door as its quite dusty and muddy around the paving, we had to wash our kids feet when they didn't remember to put their sliders on before or after getting in which was often. The kettle was full of limescale, we tried to clean it but couldn't get it clean, we just bought one for our stay. Ensure the hot tub is deep cleaned and serviced, my husband drained it, refilled it and added appropriate chemicals as the water had a green tinge to it and a thick layer of scum appeared when using the jets. It was much better after a refill and filter clean. The area is a beautiful little village with lovely residents, there is a lovely walk just down the lane to the farmers fields and a nice walk up the lane towards the church. There's a little park too which the kids enjoyed and we all had a game of football too. There's lots to do nearby and places to eat or get a takeaway, Ely is 10 minutes away and is absolutely stunning! We had an amazing time and are hoping to book to come back again. A week just isn't long enough, thank you for having us we really enjoyed our stay.

The cottage was a beautiful house and furnished in a modern, contemporary style. I cannot fault the bedrooms or bathrooms at all. Hottub was wonderful! However, there are a few areas that prevent this cottage from being a five star rating Sofa in lounge area cannot accommodate 8 people. The cottage needs a deep clean, lots of cobwebs, spiders and general dirt in cupboards etc. Not enough lounge seating in the garden for 8 people. The garden was very unkempt, could have done with the lawn being mowed and weeds removed. This spoilt the overall impression of the cottage as it looked as if no one cared. It would have been nice if the cottage included a DVD player and BBQ, these have been in all other cottages we have stayed in. A fridge in the utility area would have been useful it was impossible to keep all food and drink for 8 people in the one fridge in the kitchen area.
The inside of the property and all of its facilities was excellent but let down by the uncut garden lawn and very dirty sliding folding doors windows between the kitchen and garden. Would have been 5 stars but for those details. Great location for quiet break but easy access to Ely and Cambridge.
The cottage was absolutely lovely and so well equipped. Ely is a very short drive away and is so beautiful. The market was amazing on the Saturday.
This was an excellent property with all that you need for the 7 of us who stayed. There wasnt one item we needed that we couldnt find. It is decorated well and is very comfortable. With a cloak room downstairs and 3 bathrooms upstairs was very helpful for those less mobile. It was also good to have different rooms downstairs which gave plenty of space for people to spread out. The fitted kitchen needs a little TLC as some of it is no longer fitting and the mattress in the main bedroom opposite the stairs needs replacing as it is impossible not to roll into the middle. However, the positives of this property make the couple of issues very forgettable. Would definitely recommend this property.
We spend a weekend in this lovely home filming YouTube with kids Jude Miller Tv ... We spend a weekend in this lovely home filming YouTube with kids Jude Miller Tv we will definitely come back again it is lovely cosy home very clean and have everything what we need it

A very nice property in a good location for exploring the area. The bedrooms and bathrooms were well presented with good facilities. Downstairs however, there were several things that were disappointing. The oven and hob were difficult to use, even using the manufacturer instructions provided. The hob had no instructions and on requesting these from the housekeeper we got an email that showed dials for a different model of the make. Clear written instructions should be added to the house book. Similarly the washing machine manufacturer's instructions were for a completely different make to the one provided. The dishwasher was out of order for the duration of our stay and no tea towels were provided. As a property for 8 people the provision of crockery and cutlery was inadequate there were only 8 knives and forks and 8 wine glasses! Even with a dishwasher people do not want to be continually washing up. The dining table is of very poor quality with the joints separating and uneven. There are only 6 dining chairs and 6 breakfast chairs meaning we were moving chairs around at each mealtime. We had to request keys from the housekeeper to be able to open the bifold doors to the garden and the back door to the property has a very stiff lock making it difficult to use. The housekeeper was very helpful and responsive. This feedback will, I hope, be taken in a constructive manner as the owners have a very nice property that could be turned into a super one with some further, modest, investment. At present I would say that the property is not good value for money but with improvement could be.
