You’ll smell the woodsmoke before you see the place. Then the lid comes off, steam curls up into the cold air, and the long dark line of the fells sits across the valley while the fields go grey and the first stars come out over the moors. That’s the whole point of a night here.
Nothing to do but soak.
Search for Ribble Valley lodges with hot tubs and most of what comes back is one park at a time, each selling its own decking. We’ve done the comparing instead, from luxury cabins for two to a family base with a farm on site, with who each suits, which take dogs and what’s on the doorstep. | Place to stay | Sleeps | Dogs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ribchester retreat | 2 | Yes | Couples with a dog, Roman history |
| Newton-in-Bowland glamping | 2 | No | Remote fell walks, stargazing |

Those last two sit just outside our six. Pendle View Lodge at Altham has a woodburner, a wood-fired tub and an enclosed garden, which matters a lot if your dog likes to wander off on its own. The pet-friendly glamping pod at Chatburn is open-plan, about 2.5 miles from town.
Are Ribble Valley lodges with hot tubs worth booking in winter?
Yes, and it might be the best time of all.
The Forest of Bowland was made an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1964 and now carries the National Landscape title, covering 312 square miles of heather moorland, blanket bog and quiet farmland across two counties. Very few towns light up the sky above it. The National Landscape team says winter is the absolute best time for stargazing, when the skies are at their darkest. Lie back in the water and you can pick out Orion without a telescope! On the clearest nights you might even see the Milky Way.
There are four official Dark Sky Discovery Sites, all with parking:
- Beacon Fell Country Park
- The Gisburn Forest Hub
- Slaidburn village car park
- The Crook o’ Lune picnic site
Summer has its own pull. The Perseid meteor shower peaks in August, and long evenings leave time to explore a fell before your soak.
Things to do from your stay
None of these is a long drive from anywhere on this list.
1. The Norman castle above the market town
Its little stone keep is one of the smallest surviving Norman keeps in England, and it’s stood over the town since the 12th century. The keep itself is shut for restoration work at the moment. Still, the 16 acres of parkland around Clitheroe Castle are free to wander every day, with Lancashire’s first labyrinth for the kids.
Inside, there’s a museum. Here’s what the county council lists for this winter:
- Adults £5.20, under 18s free
- 1 November to 14 February: 12 noon to 4pm, closed Wednesdays and Thursdays
- Castle grounds: free, open every day
2. The Tolkien Trail at Hurst Green
J.R.R. Tolkien spent long spells at Stonyhurst College during the Second World War while he was writing The Lord of the Rings, and the countryside around it may well have inspired him. Visit Lancashire sets the 5.5 mile circuit from the Shireburn Arms in Hurst Green, past Shire Lane and the River Shirebourn. Allow two and a half hours. It’s about 5 miles west of town.
3. Pendle Hill and Whalley
At 557 metres, it’s the big whaleback you’ll keep spotting across the valley. The popular climb starts in Barley, follows the Ogden reservoirs and then pulls steeply up Boar Clough on to the plateau. Barley was home to one of the families caught up in the Pendle witch trials of 1612.
On the way back, Whalley and its abbey ruins make an easy stop.
4. Ribchester’s Roman fort
The Romans built a cavalry fort here around AD 72 and rebuilt it in stone in the early 130s. You can see what’s left of the bath house, and the Ribchester Roman Museum, open since 1915, holds the finds. It was closed from September 2025 to early October 2026, so check before you go.
5. Gisburn Forest and Stocks Reservoir
Nearly 3,000 acres of woodland make this the largest forest in the county, and it’s a fine place to tire out a dog or a teenager before an evening in the tub.
- Bike trails graded green to black, like ski runs
- The easy Bottoms Beck route, which runs past Stocks Reservoir
- Forest roads that suit every level of cyclist
- Bike hire and a café at The Hub, Dale Head
Before you book: practical tips
- Dogs: the Ribchester retreat, the two-bedroom park home near Chipping, the Tosside retreat, Pendle View and the Chatburn pod all welcome them. The Newton-in-Bowland hideaways, the Longridge cabin and Balderstone don’t.
- By train: the town’s station is the end of the line from Manchester Victoria via Blackburn, around an hour and a quarter, but you’ll need a car or taxi for the last few miles.
- Boots: farm tracks and fell paths stay muddy most of the year, so pack wellies for a walking holiday.
- Stargazing: wrap up, switch the decking lights off and give your eyes twenty minutes.
- Food: one listing calls Longridge and the castle town full of independent shops and restaurants, so stock up and sample the local craft beer on the way in.
Quick answers before you book
Is a hot tub the same as a jacuzzi?
Near enough. Jacuzzi is a brand name that people use for any bubbling tub, so if you’ve been searching for a jacuzzi break in the valley, these are the same thing. Every place on this page lists its own tub, and the Tosside listing says outright that it’s private.
The best pick for a family holiday
Go for the two-bedroom place near Chipping, for the animals and play areas on the park. Need more room? The riverside home at Balderstone sleeps six.
Is the Ribble Valley in the Lake District?
No, it’s well south of the Lakes, and the Yorkshire Dales begin just past Gisburn Forest. If you’re weighing up both, our Yorkshire Dales hot tub cottages are a short hop north east.
For a dog that needs a fenced space, our guide to dog friendly lodges with hot tubs and enclosed gardens covers the whole country, and our hot tub inspiration guides cover huts, cabins and more. For a holiday in this green corner of Lancashire, though, these six are where we’d start. Once you’ve picked, you can compare every holiday cottage with a hot tub in the UK in one place.
