About Towerhill Barn

In a gloriously scenic spot in Cumbria, this Grade II-listed upside-down cottage is a wonderful option for countryside-loving families and groups of friends. The property boasts original features and panoramic views across the reservoir towards Carlisle and the Solway Firth, so soothing views are the norm.

You’ll be surrounded by scenic walking routes, rolling moorland and fascinating history. Castle Carrock Reservoir (0.5 miles) is right on your doorstep for tranquil waterside strolls and wildlife spotting, while the village of Castle Carrock (1.5 miles) has a local pub serving up tasty ales and hearty dinners.

Enjoy scenic lakeside walks and water sports at Talkin Tarn (2 miles), and discover fascinating Roman remains at Hadrian’s Wall (2.5 miles). The city of Carlisle (11 miles) is fab for a day out, with its striking cathedral, castle and museums.

Or head to the Lake District National Park (27 miles) for yet more spectacular scenery. The cottage has its living spaces on the first floor to make the most of the sweeping countryside views.

There’s a welcoming lounge with an elegant wood-panelled wall, a wood burner in one corner and a vaulted ceiling with beams – a charming spot for relaxing together after long days out in the fresh air. The separate dining room has a set of glass doors and a Juliet balcony, for sharing meals prepared in the well-equipped kitchen.

Entertainment is well covered too, so you can plan film nights. One of the property’s standout features is the unique second-floor viewing gallery right at the top of the tower, where you can absorb all that far-reaching scenery (please note, the stairs are steep and narrow).

All of the bedrooms are on the ground floor: there are two super-king-size bedrooms, one with an en-suite wet room and one that can be arranged as a twin on request. There’s also a separate twin bedroom.

Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery - CA3 8TP
about 9 Miles
This is a museum and art gallery in one and will suit those looking for an educational and cultural day out.  You can explore the fantastic art collection including Fine Art, Decorative Art and Textiles.  If you love nature then this aspect of Tullie House will appeal. The museum holds large and important collections of zoological, botanical and geological material. And for lovers of history there is plenty to wet your appetite here. Tullie House collects a wide range of historic materials including objects, ephemera (printed material), photographs and associated information files.  We think this museum and art gallery are excellent value for money as well.
Kielder Water Bird of Prey Centre - NE48 1BT
about 22 Miles
Housing the most fascinating collection of Birds of Prey in the North East this centre is definitely worth a visit if you are staying in the Kielder Water area. Located in Falstone it's easy to get to and makes a great day out for both families and couples.  As well as seeing the amazing birds you can learn all about the captive breeding programme and the excellent work being done there.  Some of the highlights of the day might include watching a Falcon stoop down from the skies at over 100mph and admiring the grace of the Eagles, Kites and Hawks.
Lake District Wildlife Park - CA12 4RD
about 24 Miles
We love this day out in Cumbria where you're encouraged to "take a fresh look".  Some of the amazing animals you will get to see include the only Canadian Lynx in the UK and you will have the opportunity to help their Lynx Conservation Project.  The Asian Fishing Cat is also well worth a look - these cats are known for diving under the water and catching fish!  Other activities include fantastic flying displays and play areas for the little ones...
Ullswater Steamers - CA11 0US
about 25 Miles
This is an award winning Lake District attraction and they have been operating cruisers on Lake Ullswater for over 150 years.  There is no better way to explore the lakes than on water and you could even combine a cruise with a spectacular walk.  For great days out in this region then this attraction is highly recommended and will appeal to couples as well as families.  Corporate groups are also well catered for.
