Venture further, and the Forest of Bowland is on your doorstep with walks galore, Gresgarth Hall Gardens (1.5 miles), and several opportunities to climb, including Clougha Pike and Grit Fell (8 miles). Lancaster city is less than 5 miles away and boasts a castle, museums, and independent food spots, or perhaps swap the city for the beach and visit Morecambe (7 miles) for a day on the sand and shingle.

The Lake District and Yorkshire Dales are both within 20 miles when the group fancies a full day in the hills. Make your way over to your private island in the River Lune and admire your surroundings as you go.
